So, make your strategic plan!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Continuing the process of planning\u2026<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3699\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/business-strategy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So now we\u2019re getting organized.\u00a0 There are many ways to express the roadmap for your enterprise.\u00a0 One of the most popular was used by the U.S. Army late in World War II and adopted by many high-profile businesses such as Texas Instruments after the War.\u00a0 And I\u2019s my favorite method of organizing a strategic plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are two important elements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The structure combines the listing of your goal with a series of strategies and then tactics, each designed to support each other, each measurable and made public throughout the organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s call it \u201cOST.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The technique, \u201cOST\u201d (objective, strategies, and tactics), is a very good way to organize your effort to find guideposts and then develop metrics to measure progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a strategy?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a medium range process involving senior management and departmental management as well, directing resources in ways that, as accomplished, lead the company toward the goal.\u00a0 A typical small to medium business finds five sweeping strategies for the current year, many cross-departmental, and some carried over from the previous year\u2019s plan and even from years before that.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span> Here are some example strategies from some of my companies over the recent years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expand into at least three new continents through new distribution channels.<\/li>\n<li>Penetrate the Fortune 500 with at least five active accounts within two years.<\/li>\n<li>Create a hosted \u201csoftware as a service\u201d or \u201con demand\u201d addition to our product line by end of (next) year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Aren\u2019t these just goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2961\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/strategy-tactics.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"247\" \/>Note that these are expansive \u201cjunior\u201d goals that, if achieved, would certainly move the company forward toward a larger financial goal.\u00a0 Yet each is measurable if achieved.\u00a0 In fact, the degree of progress toward achievement can also be achieved, such as \u201cWe did establish early profitable relationships with two of the five Fortune 50 accounts this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Measurement is the key to success.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even at the strategic level.\u00a0 Next week, we\u2019ll look at the last major step in creating an OST plan for an entire organization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing the process of planning\u2026 So now we\u2019re getting organized.\u00a0 There are many ways to express the roadmap for your enterprise.\u00a0 One of the most popular was used by the U.S. Army late in World War II and adopted by &hellip;
