{"id":4992,"date":"2022-06-30T10:00:55","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T17:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4992"},"modified":"2022-06-17T11:09:16","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T18:09:16","slug":"leadership-sell-the-dream-while-making-the-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4992","title":{"rendered":"Leadership: Sell the dream while making the reality."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a leader, you set the goals, establish the strategies and tactics to get there (with help<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2944\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Goals-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/> from others of course) and sell the dream to all your stakeholders.\u00a0 And that includes potential customers as well as executives and employees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can unmanaged growth ever happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes growth happens without a leader envisioning it, living it daily, evangelizing it to anyone who will listen.\u00a0 But not often.\u00a0 More often, you (the leader) set the goal and push for achievement \u2013 hopefully establishing a realistic set of strategies and accurate metrics to measure progress along a timeline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A leadership goal vs. a mantra:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I once sat in on a roundtable meeting in which the executive of a company stated his goal as \u201ceducate the world.\u201d\u00a0 To be fair, he followed a bit later with a goal of thirty million dollars in revenue within five years, which got my attention.\u00a0 The first statement was a mantra, a vision, a rallying cry.\u00a0 But when he did state a monetary goal, he started a real conversation about how he will achieve it and with what resources, and which of several focused revenue models.<\/p>\n<p>Note that \u201cEducate the world\u201d elicited little response until the group saw the financial goal.\u00a0 Your executives, board and others will surely do the same.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, which one is actionable?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]\u00a0<\/em><\/span> \u00a0You will have sold the dream \u2013 one that is tangible and actionable.\u00a0 So that is the challenge you won\u2019t be able to avoid.\u00a0 With that number out there, you will be held accountable by your board (and hopefully yourself) to make this happen in the time period stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is this different from the \u201cvision thing?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For sure. Leaders lead.
