{"id":4976,"date":"2022-06-09T10:00:56","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4976"},"modified":"2022-05-27T11:09:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T18:09:45","slug":"are-there-only-three-types-of-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4976","title":{"rendered":"Are there only three types of advice?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;Here&#8217;s the deal&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, I occasionally read suspense novels to break up the relative monotony of constant<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3312\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/advice1-300x222.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/> business books. A sentence in the one I recently read caught my eye. \u201cThere are three types of advice,\u201d the wise White House Senior Counsel to the President told the young White House attorney.<\/p>\n<p>He referred to the three as <em>legal advice<\/em>, <em>moral advice,<\/em> and <em>political advice.<\/em>\u00a0 Remember that this was a book about politics. What struck me is how he defined the three:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u2018What you can do, what you should do, and what you want to do.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stick with me on the can\u2013should\u2013want thought for a minute.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that a template for our managerial decision making?\u00a0 Is it legal? Ethical? Advantageous for me or my cause?\u00a0 What if all of us used this as our filter when making business decisions?\u00a0 It seems to me that lots of problems would disappear, and our gray area decisions made clearer.\u00a0 And what if politicians filtered their decisions through the same process?\u00a0 It would be refreshing if each of our representatives put the moral and ethical filter above the decision to seek advantage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a great thought for each of us in business.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Discipline ourselves to think whether a tough decision passes the legal, moral and finally, then the political tests.\u00a0 It would work equally well in our lives and within the walls of the White House or Congress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Here&#8217;s the deal&#8230;&#8221; So, I occasionally read suspense novels to break up the relative monotony of constant business books.
