{"id":4672,"date":"2021-08-12T10:00:06","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T17:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4672"},"modified":"2021-07-30T10:38:29","modified_gmt":"2021-07-30T17:38:29","slug":"are-you-being-watched-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4672","title":{"rendered":"Are you being watched at work?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Your past and present experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2564 alignright\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/leading-3d-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ever had a manager above you who said one thing and did another?\u00a0 At least once?\u00a0 Or in a\u00a0pattern of repeats?\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0 Did you think less of that person for it?\u00a0 Would you follow that manager to the ends of the earth?\u00a0 Well, almost everyone has had multiple such experiences with a senior manager.\u00a0 And most people think less of that person than before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other hand\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, think of the professional you most admire.\u00a0 Do you know of any times that person has made promises to you and missed on delivering them?\u00a0 The difference comes down to trust and respect.\u00a0 We lose both when we catch someone, especially someone above us, acting differently than his or her self-proclaimed rules, or even violating company rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does rank really have its privileges?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is one of the most vital elements of good management \u2013 restraining oneself when rank would ordinarily grant special privilege, and instead acting as one would expect a subordinate to act.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples can seem surprisingly insignificant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]\u00a0<\/em> <\/span>\u00a0 Black and white examples include taking supplies <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3318\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Micromanaging-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" \/>home, using company time to perform personal duties (if not permitted), and even traveling business class at company expense on short trips.\u00a0 Larger and more important examples involve direct promises that are broken, such as review dates with implied raises, or promised follow-through on an issue of great urgency to person receiving the promise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just don\u2019t take those small liberties<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everything you do as a manager is watched by one or many.\u00a0 The very culture of the enterprise is shaken when someone in power gets away with bending or breaking the rules expected to be adhered to by all.\u00a0 Why have rules, or a company handbook, or new employee orientation sessions if the actions don\u2019t match the words?<\/p>\n<p>And once violated, it is almost impossible to retract the action.\u00a0 That should make us think twice before taking small liberties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your past and present experiences Ever had a manager above you who said one thing and did another?\u00a0 At least once?\u00a0 Or in a\u00a0pattern of repeats?\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0 Did you think less of that person for it?\u00a0 Would &hellip;
