{"id":4090,"date":"2020-01-09T10:00:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T18:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4090"},"modified":"2020-01-02T16:05:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-03T00:05:09","slug":"can-your-employees-recruit-from-a-customer-or-supplier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4090","title":{"rendered":"Can your employees recruit from a customer or supplier?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The recruitment traps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has happened to all of us who have been leaders in business long enough.\u00a0 One of your <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3458\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/we_are_watching_you-250x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/we_are_watching_you-250x300.png 250w, https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/we_are_watching_you.png 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>employees is approached by an employee of a customer or of a supplier, stating that \u201cIt sure would be great to work in your company.\u201d\u00a0 And without a policy or sometimes without thinking, your employee responds with a \u201cLet me help,\u201d or worse yet, \u201cI have a position open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>State your policy clearly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You should be clear from the start that no one at your company may offer a job to any current employee of a stakeholder &#8211; a customer, a partner in development or in distribution, or of a supplier. The rule should be one that includes only one \u201cout\u201d: if a person resigns from the position with the stake-holding company, then you will be happy to talk about a position.\u00a0 No winking, sending signals, or quiet promises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The exception<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are instances where such an existing stakeholder employee offers to go to his or her boss and ask permission to speak with you, and the boss not only concurs but agrees to call you (not just to take your call).\u00a0 In that case alone, it is proper to continue as far as the offer and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My story of an employee over the line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[ Email readers, continue here&#8230;]\u00a0<\/em><\/span> \u00a0Let me tell you the story from one of my companies where I was chairman that recently learned about the recruiting rules that should have been in place &#8211; the hard way.\u00a0 The CEO of my company checked into a hotel that was a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3845\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Attention-spans1-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" \/>customer for its enterprise management system, and through a few innocent questions found that the owner of that hotel and other hotels was about to purchase several new systems for his new projects.\u00a0 The front desk clerk cheerfully gave my CEO the hotel owner\u2019s contact information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The blow-back from the other side<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, the CEO called the hotel owner that day.\u00a0 \u201cI will never deal with your company again!\u201d was the short reply from the hotel owner to the CEO, shocking the CEO looking for a closer relationship and future sales.\u00a0 It turns out that another manager from my CEO\u2019s company had recently approached that very same cheerful hotel clerk, hinting that a job would be available if she\u2019d like to apply.\u00a0\u00a0 The clerk told the owner, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backing your way out of a bad situation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Properly, my CEO begged the hotel owner for forgiveness, immediately sent an email to all our company\u2019s managers reinforcing the existing policy of not hiring a stakeholder\u2019s employee and spoke to our employee making the offer in a non-threatening tone, again reinforcing the policy.\u00a0 During the phone conversation with the hotel owner, our CEO carefully set the stage for a later call to mend fences and check on progress with the existing system already installed.\u00a0 He made all the right moves given the situation.<\/p>\n<p>But wouldn\u2019t it have been easier to avoid this kind of sticky and dangerous event in the first place?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The recruitment traps It has happened to all of us who have been leaders in business long enough.\u00a0 One of your employees is approached by an employee of a customer or of a supplier, stating that \u201cIt sure would be &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=4090\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_uf_show_specific_survey":0,"_uf_disable_surveys":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[8,1,20,10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-depending-upon-others","category-general","category-protecting-the-business","category-surrounding-yourself-with-talent"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4090","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=4090"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4090\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=4090"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=4090"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=4090"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
