This is the final post of this cycle. \u00a0Next week we return to the start of the journey, focusing upon the \u201cwhat and how\u201d to ignite a successful enterprise from start-up to exit. But, for this short moment\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking back over an entrepreneur\u2019s journey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I look back over more than fifty years as an entrepreneur, I can think of the financial <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3638\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Looking-back1-300x120.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\" \/>focus of my three entrepreneurial businesses as a prime driver in my life during the early stage of each.\u00a0 And yet, as I recall the greatest thrills, the memorable events, the best of memories, almost none are about the money.<\/p>\n<p>The stories of people rising to the occasion, victories in the form of great sale successes, great continuing relationships, occasional awards from valued industry or academic institutions, being able to give back to those who appreciate the gift of time or money \u2013 all seem to rise well above the feeling recalled about the check or wire transfer that represented a completed sale of a company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rewards of angel investing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]<\/em><\/span>\u00a0 I found one of my joys in angel investing, putting money to work by investing time and money into promising young entrepreneurs much like I <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3294\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Smart-Money-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>once was, coaching them, putting them together with others who have needed skills, helping to build someone else\u2019s dream.\u00a0 If you are in such a good place in your life, find a local angel investing group by navigating to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.angelcapitalassociation.org\">www.angelcapitalassociation.org<\/a> and clicking on \u201cFind Angels.\u201d \u00a0You will find such a group near enough to drive to their periodic meetings.\u00a0 You\u2019ll quickly be drawn into the governance of the organization and introduced into the process of discovery, coaching, leading deals, herding investors, serving on boards and helping entrepreneurs toward liquidity events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-profit boards and volunteering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found another joy in community organizations, joining a total of four non-profit boards, learning at first much more than I could teach, but rising over the years to leadership positions with large psychic rewards along each step of the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enough family times?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And then there is family.\u00a0 Be honest with yourself. Have you ever spent enough time with your family?\u00a0 Can you ever spend enough?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it time to try?<\/p>\n<p>It may take you some time to come to this conclusion.
