{"id":2873,"date":"2017-02-16T10:00:54","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T18:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=2873"},"modified":"2017-02-13T10:20:09","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T18:20:09","slug":"control-your-euphoria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=2873","title":{"rendered":"Control your euphoria!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing a senior manager can count on is that someday, something will go right, very right.\u00a0 Well, after all the disappointments, pressure and outright failures, this is NEWS.<\/p>\n<p>So we tend to go overboard a bit.\u00a0 As a member of the board, I\u2019ve received calls on weekends, at night and texts at hours I didn\u2019t even think existed \u2013 from CEOs who <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2876\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Conrol_euphoria-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>couldn\u2019t control the euphoria.\u00a0 A successful test.\u00a0 Completion of a software project by the remote workers in (Philippines, Brazil, Armenia, fill in the blank\u2026 Just name a country whose daytime is our nighttime.)\u00a0 You get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Now, even those late night awakenings don\u2019t bother me. I can get behind the excitement as well as anyone, especially when my money is riding on the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>The problem sometimes comes shortly thereafter.\u00a0 Guided by the enthusiasm of the moment, management orders (fill in the blank from your own experience here) an early release, increased spend for marketing, hiring more people to handle expected demand or early manufacture, or maybe just feeling so optimistic \u2013 that the conservative approval of spending is suspended in anticipation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]<\/em><\/span> \u00a0A moment, please\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Remember to think of the many steps in the supply chain.\u00a0 That success is by definition just one of many such steps, and others will be affected almost always in negative ways not yet considered.\u00a0 Early release?\u00a0 What happened to the careful rollout plan?\u00a0 The capacity analysis? The cash requirements forecast?<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t hard to be optimistic, and it is a joy to see others be euphoric, or to be so yourself.\u00a0 And yet, I\u2019ve seen and heard stories of companies that ramped prematurely directly as a result of management euphoria, especially in the software and medical device niches.\u00a0 But no\u2013one is immune to this disease.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling a bit euphoric?\u00a0 Congratulations.
