We need financial data for comparison, and to a degree \u2013 for planning.\u00a0 But we should be thinking of finding ways to make data available to us much earlier, when it is more meaningful and actionable.<\/p>\n<p>Call it \u201cpervasive access\u201d or just\u2013in\u2013time reporting.\u00a0 Or better yet, near real time <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2726\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/looking-back-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"looking-back\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/looking-back-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/looking-back.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>information that we can use to make changes, decrease costs, or better manage assets like inventory or cash \u2013 or people.<\/p>\n<p>If there were no reports, we would have to manage by exception, more by observation than by analysis.\u00a0 Perhaps we\u2019d use a real time dashboard, one in which all information is fed from direct input from processes in motion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]<\/em><\/span> See, the value of information does decrease over time \u2013 more than we recognize.\u00a0 We fall into the habit of looking at weekly or monthly reporting, and react to trends by holding meetings, changing processes after the fact.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you could develop changes in your business processes so that information, even big data, would be available and analyzed for exceptions almost instantly?\u00a0 How much money, time and resources would we save?<\/p>\n<p>So that should become a departmental or corporate goal for you.\u00a0 Find places where reporting can be made by exception, not routine.\u00a0 Call center getting behind?\u00a0 Production slowed or stopped?\u00a0 Sales slipping unexpectedly?\u00a0 Why wait until the damage is done?<\/p>\n<p>Find the areas where a real time exception reporting is possible and proactive.\u00a0 Develop a system for early, even instant alerts when things get beyond comfort or safety.\u00a0 And dump or consolidate the much later reports to save valuable time at period end.\u00a0 Can you find at least one of these to implement today?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wouldn\u2019t it be great if there were no more digital or printed reports to tell us what happened in the past?\u00a0 I know.
