(How Steve Jobs got it right.)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Credit Dr. Mark Goulston with this headline.\u00a0 Mark teaches that there is a process to innovation that can be summed up with these four words.\u00a0 In fact, he states, that\u2019s exactly how Steve Jobs described his \u201caha moment.\u201d\u00a0 So let\u2019s paraphrase Mr. Jobs as we describe this process.<\/p>\n<p>Jobs was invited to Xerox Parc research facility and \u2013 against the better judgment of the research coordinator \u2013 shown three projects the engineers were working on.\u00a0 The first of <a href=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Wow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2451\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Wow-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Wow\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>the three was a rough cobbling together of a graphic user interface, complete with a crude \u201cmouse.\u201d\u00a0 Jobs hardly remembered the other two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoa,\u201d he must have thought when seeing that GUI for the first time. \u201cWow!\u201d he states in later recounts was his intense impression.\u00a0 \u201cHmmm\u201d \u2013 that could be the future of computing everywhere, he says he thought immediately.\u00a0 \u201cYes!\u201d he must have said to his colleagues as soon as he was away from the facility.\u00a0 His vision for the Macintosh and later for all that followed came from that \u201cYes!\u201d moment, defining what would become one of the most valuable companies on earth with a single \u201caha\u201d moment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]<\/em><\/span> \u00a0This is a process that you and I can use.\u00a0 Think for a moment.\u00a0 Have you ever had such a game\u2013changing \u201caha\u201d moment in your business life?\u00a0 And if not, could you recognize it as a defining experience as Jobs did?<\/p>\n<p>There are many examples of great advances in technology or industry from such aha moments.\u00a0 But it is as much a skill to be developed as an accident of fate.\u00a0\u00a0 Discipline yourself to notice things that not only interest you, but draw deeply into your emotional self as you see them for the first time.\u00a0 And when you do spot such an anomaly, \u201cwhoa.\u201d\u00a0 Slow down to absorb what you\u2019ve seen and how you are reacting to it.<\/p>\n<p>Your \u201cwow!\u201d moment follows if you can identify why you stopped to look, and connect that with your reason for excitement.\u00a0 \u201cHmmm.\u201d\u00a0 This could be important and lead to something big for us. \u201cYes!\u201d\u00a0 I know what we can do to change the world with this.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a process that is repeatable, even if the time this happens is rare, perhaps as in Jobs\u2019 case, once in a lifetime.\u00a0 But isn\u2019t it worth making this a skill in your inventory of skills?\u00a0 Perhaps the result is not a game\u2013changer, just a great lift for the business.\u00a0 Or perhaps it is the beginning of everything grand to follow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Credit Dr. Mark Goulston with this headline.\u00a0 Mark teaches that there is a process to innovation that can be summed up with these four words.\u00a0 In fact, he states, that\u2019s exactly how Steve Jobs described his \u201caha moment.\u201d\u00a0 So let\u2019s &hellip;
