{"id":1402,"date":"2012-09-06T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2012-09-06T19:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=1402"},"modified":"2012-09-06T12:00:59","modified_gmt":"2012-09-06T19:00:59","slug":"does-your-team-know-your-playbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=1402","title":{"rendered":"Does your team know your playbook?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This one comes straight from football.\u00a0 From experience and from information about the competition, a coach creates a playbook that contains detailed plans for actions or plays that the entire team must know without question and execute without pause in order to win games and advance toward the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>What is different about you as a manager?\u00a0 If you manage with your team knowing the intended results of each action, and if the members of the team have not honed their skills at execution of their tasks, then you are the coach without a playbook.\u00a0 And if you have a plan but do not share it with your direct reports, then <a href=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Managing_force.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-912\" title=\"Managing_force\" src=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Managing_force-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Managing_force-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Managing_force.jpg 427w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>they are acting without motivation toward mutual goals, without metrics to measure their progress toward the goals, and without the leadership that makes great winners.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">[Email readers, continue here&#8230;]<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 So what does your business playbook look like?\u00a0 How do you create and update it?\u00a0 Who gets to see it?\u00a0 Again, there is a great parallel in football coaching.\u00a0 The coach creates a playbook from experience and research.\u00a0 He drills the team again and again in execution of the plays from memory and without pause.\u00a0 He keeps metrics for each team member to see, including yards gained, passes completed, games won.\u00a0 He compares these metrics to past seasons, to competitors, to his own lifetime bests.<\/p>\n<p>You as a business leader are the coach for your team, no matter what the size.\u00a0 Trained employees execute their tasks better than those who are not.\u00a0 You are responsible for the training and for the outcomes both for individuals and the team.\u00a0 You set the goals and develop the metrics by which your team is measured against those goals.\u00a0 You publish the metrics, and use them to focus and align your team to perform even better.<\/p>\n<p>You develop, train, measure, and reinforce successes, all based upon your coach\u2019s playbook.\u00a0 Unless of course you have no playbook and are just a fan in the stands without a clue, cheering for a team you know and love but do not effectively lead.\u00a0 All because of the playbook you should have created, shared, and used as your team\u2019s guide to success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This one comes straight from football.\u00a0 From experience and from information about the competition, a coach creates a playbook that contains detailed plans for actions or plays that the entire team must know without question and execute without pause in &hellip;
