{"id":1122,"date":"2011-12-15T18:09:33","date_gmt":"2011-12-16T02:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=1122"},"modified":"2011-12-15T18:09:33","modified_gmt":"2011-12-16T02:09:33","slug":"is-success-a-goal-or-a-byproduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berkonomics.com\/?p=1122","title":{"rendered":"Is success a goal or a byproduct?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Look this up sometime in your browser: \u201cSuccess is a byproduct, not a goal.\u201d\u00a0 You will find it attributed to tens of originators.\u00a0 I first heard this in an episode of <em>Friday Night Lights<\/em>, when sage Coach Taylor began a locker room speech with those words.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And yet, when I facilitate strategic planning sessions, I often lead executives to create a goal for their enterprise, one which can be reached by successfully accomplishing a series of strategic actions, each of which is braced with a series of tactics to accomplish in its support.\u00a0 The goal is often stated in revenues, such as \u201cBecome a twenty million dollar company in three years.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achieving such a goal is a direct measure of the success of the company\u2019s strategies and tactics.\u00a0 But in this case, the goal <em>is<\/em> success, which is counter to the locker room speech by the good coach.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is most important to focus everyone in the organization on a goal.\u00a0 And when that goal is achieved, another should be set, then another.\u00a0 Achievement of the goal is a byproduct of the successful accomplishment of each of those strategic and tactical actions called for in a good plan.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The point to remember is that you, as leader, must set and broadcast a clear goal, one that rallies your troops to succeed.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let the goal be achieved merely by the accident of good work and practice.\u00a0 Make it tangible, obvious, attainable with effort, and worthwhile for the players on your team.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In that sense, success <em>is<\/em> a goal, contrary to the locker room encouragement by the coach. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Look this up sometime in your browser: \u201cSuccess is a byproduct, not a goal.\u201d\u00a0 You will find it attributed to tens of originators.\u00a0 I first heard this in an episode of Friday Night Lights, when sage Coach Taylor began &hellip;
