I feel like a boat owner. The best move we made was buying our office (w/a 15 year mortgage), and the second best move was selling it (after 13 years). The proceeds are now in a DST, and after several bad moves in the market, those 5 investments’ monthly distributions put us ahead for the year! M

PS No way to a lease!

Dave — This was an excellent piece and a very important topic for today’s business environment. The real challenge with remote virtual offices is the ability to build a culture. In my opinion, and based on my experience, it is much tougher to build a culture with virtual office(s) than it is when everyone is associating daily in person. I have seen very effective culture building done in a virtual environment, but it takes skill, commitment and training to be able to pull it off.

Hi Dave,

An important feature of the virtual office is its portability. Our CEO (I have semi-retired) operates from the road. That includes Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, the Middle East, and Europe. He has become an expert at air travel and hotel booking. Even on an airplane, he can be in touch with everyone.

Many people have horrible commutes. They harbor resentment toward the company that forces that on them even though it's partly their own decision. They may not even recognize this resentment, but it's there beneath the surface.

I am amazed that telecommuting has not taken the world by storm.
