This piece got me wondering, why did the US steel industry die in the '70? Its easy to blame foreign competition, but, the observation has been made that they died with pre WW1 factories. Why would anyone think that his 60 year old factory could competed with factories 10 to 20 years old, foreign or domestic? (After all, except for steel factories in the US and Canada, there were few operational steel factories in the world in 1946. Any foreign factories had to be less than 30 years old in 1976.) Why did management make the decision to not make any real change through the Great Depression, WW2 and the post WW2 period?
How change adverse can you get?
