Thanks Dave for the investment side of the tale. I knew Tom pretty well back then and you indeed lost a good guy. Tom was ready for a bigger pond to swim in as some employees always will be at some point.

I had a great manager once you also knew (what a small world!). He is a manager I, to this day, tell tales about and remain in awe of his coaching and personality. Such people are rare but it was my great luck to be his "apprentice" and learn what a manager really should be.

One day I too knew I needed a bigger pond to swim in like Tom in your story. After a lot of discussion with my "guru" as I think of him still today he agreed and wished me well.

As I was leaving some weeks later he called an "all company" meeting to wish me bon voyage. I realized part way through his speech what he was doing. He was sending a message of hope and encouragement to the remaining troops that my progress was a thing not just to be celebrated but much more importantly emulated by those that stayed.

From that day forward I would always do the same for such situations (right after bending their arm in a hammer lock and seeking 28 other solutions :-)).

His name was Henry and I tell his story one more time.
