I really like this column. It not only explains "inciting incident" in movie terms that the whole world understands but also gives a real business example that I can relate to.

Could a business have multiple inciting incidents? Would that split the business up and pull them off focus? Maybe; maybe not.

I've been working to create our inciting incident for years. Now, we seem to have more than one inciting incident now. The original inciting incident was my disappointment with the state of science education and my idea for changing it dramatically. That created a technology but not a business.

Now, we have a contract with Discovery Education that promises to provide us with enormous marketing power. That's not much of an incident, however. It's a major milestone as is our contract with California State University.

The big incident is our pending, almost certain, approval for the dreaded California a-g requirements. This event will open up the entire state to us while restricting our competitors. The cascading effect will help us open up the entire country to use our online hands-on labs in place of the wet labs currently in use.

Thanks for this...now I'll know what to call it when I see it. Even better, I'll begin to see it when it starts to unfold and take shape. But, most of all, now that I have a frame of reference, I can manifest it. Thanks for this brilliantly clear perspective.
