The point about high-margin businesses should be obvious to anyone, but isn't. Thanks for putting it right out there. Once your high-margin business achieves profitability, it should explode rapidly -- if you keep your eye on the ball. If you lose existing customers, then new ones only balance out.

What about businesses that use Internet delivery but not Internet sales? My business does not target individuals but rather institutions. These never click to buy. In our case, we don't have the resources to build a nationwide (and international) sales force. We survive by being very creative and highly reactive. We provide "platinum" customer service to retain as many customers as possible.

What more can we do? I'd love to see a Berkonomics article about companies like mine.

It may in our land of The Invisible Hand be absurd/ Somehow that gross profit is not on the altar of divine words/ Increase of a unit so basic it is hard to believe/ it's not the Holy Grail all businesses seek to achieve/ put the message like the national pastime/ will be hard to miss the unit line/ how could one not know/ The Big Unit and his strikeout throws/ add a Big Unit to your team/ much easier to achieve the profit dream!

(Dave's note: Mike is an attorney in Southern California whose "instant" poetry is renowned. It's a pleasure to occasionally reprint his work about one of these blog insights.)
